Overview

Black Guard has a clear business objective to produce basic hardwood farmhouse furniture products made from reclaimed timber. These products have been developed over two months with a core focus on addressing the key customer problem and associated opportunities.

The Business Objectives

When as a key component of our growth strategy we consider it critical to identify and outline our business objectives, and align these objectives with clear and measurable development milestones. Our key long term business objective is to grow profitability. It is critical that we balance revenue growth with the growth in our cost base. Whilst the desire for profitable growth may constrain our growth rate, it is more important that revenue growth in isolation.

The Customer

Black Guard has been created with a clear focus on the needs of our customers. Through a structured customer discovery process, we have validated the key customer problem as providing an affordable price point built on simplicity. This is a critical issue for our selected target market of urban dwellers and businesses.

The Value Proposition

Black Guard is uniquely positioned to deliver value to urban dwellers and businesses. "Black Guard will building solid farmhouse furniture from reclaimed timber to customers who cannot/don't want to build their own." In order to be deliver on this value proposition, we build basic, rustic hardwood timber furniture from reclaimed timber. My overheads are small and my work is simple yet reasonably priced. This capability has taken considerable time and resources to develop and forms the cornerstone of our competitive advantage against larger, structurally more complex retailers.

Competitors

We have a number of competitors within the hardwood farmhouse furniture market. We consider our key competitors to be: Early Settler and Classic Timber Furniture . Our understanding of these competitors has been used to refine our strategy and value proposition. We believe that we can compete effectively with Early Settler and Classic Timber Furniture by building basic timber furniture in my home-based workshop with it's close proximity to timber yards.


Key Strategies

Over the next 6 months our focus will be to produce consistent, quality, rustic hand-built hardwood furniture. This task will be undertaken in the context of our broader strategy of selling timber products in a cafe that I run. These strategies are a tactical implementation of our overall business goal as outlined above.

Milestones

Measurement of the successful implementation of our strategies will be governed by measurable development milestones. The milestones that will be achieved over the next 2 years are:
Selling one item per week
Move to a CBD workshop to sell to business market
Open my own coffeehouse and sell my work there (ie, diversify the workshop)
